Mission Statement

"West-Central Independent Living Solutions works to empower people with disabilities to become more independent by providing independent living skills training, peer support, information and referral and advocacy."

There are a number of basic social and political issues WILS addresses.  One of the biggest issues many people with disabilities face is everyday stigma and discrimination.  WILS works to eradicate this problem through community education and the empowerment of individual consumers.  The benefit for the consumer is that the community accepts them for who they are rather than what the community wants them to be.  The benefit to the community is that it will become more inclusive and responsive to all people's needs and issues.

The key stakeholders are:  our consumers, their families, the community and the Missouri General Assembly.

WILS responds to them in the following ways:

  • Consumers - Giving them the tools they need to live a life as independent as possible.  In addition, WILS responds by giving them exposure to other people with disabilities who have had success (peer support).
  • Family members - Providing them with information that will help them understand their loved ones' disabilities.  In addition, our staff provides information and referral to family members to help enrich their lives.
  • Community - Educating the community with a primary focus on evaluation of businesses' and local governments' accessibility in terms of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • The Missouri General Assembly - Responding to this legislative body through tracking and reporting on the expenditure of the money appropriated by the General Assembly.

We believe that people with disabilities....

  • should be able to live where they choose.
  • should pick from of menu of services instead of having services picked for them.
  • are diverse, therefore we must provide services to the most diverse set of constituents possible.
  • should be included
  • have the right to fail.
  • must realize that it is ok to have a disability and that disability  is a natural part of life.

We believe that advocacy is the tool to societal change.
